In hiking, there is a saying “The trail provides”. As an avid traveler, I find that is true for the roads I often find myself on. It was a sunny, and storybook late June morning when we found ourself driving down the Pemaquid Peninsula in Mid-coastal Maine. We were on our way to see Pemaquid Light and Christmas Cove, and enjoying the passing scenery.
A few miles before driving by, we started to see signs for the Round Pond Boat Launch and Muscongus Bay Lobster. I did not think anything of it as I was pretty excited to see Pemaquid Light and the grounds around it. Then I see another sign saying Round Pond Boat Launch with an arrow pointing left. My eyes followed, and the whole bay opened up before me. I missed the turn and immediately found a place to turn around, made our way to the parking lot and hoped out.
Like many of my experiences in Maine, it felt like I had come home (a theme I will probably use whenever talking about Maine…). The summer breeze blew across the dock. The harbor bells clanged. The gulls sang. The fishermen and locals were heading out of the bay. The fresh brine of the see filled our noses and for a brief summer moment, everything seemed in its right place. We walked around a bit and took the dog down to the water. It was still early and the restaurant was not open so we didn’t get a chance to check that one out.
Our stop wasn’t long but it was wonderful. On our way out we saw a general store opening up, and an antique shop putting its sign out. I am very excited to get back to the area soon and get to know this hidden gem a bit more.
