I found myself with 48 hour notice that I was going to join a work lunch on Friday afternoon. I realized soon after that I would be near a favorite campground and trail of mine. It is one of the smaller campgrounds in the New Jersey State Park System. It was the perfect place to spend a Friday night.

I got to camp about a quarter till six in the evening. It was a touch hotter than I would have liked. Still, I knew that as soon as the sun went down, the temps would start to drop. I had an hour before the sun went down so I started to set up the site with intention. Lucky for me, my new backpacking set up is built for a fast, yet sturdy set up. Within thirty minutes I was fully set up and the fire was lit. Now, all I had left to do was sit in my chair. I would enjoy the fire and enjoy an edible or two and let the night ease me into her sleep.

It was a little chilly at about fifty degrees, but nothing that was too uncomfortable. The hardest part of the night was trying to get some consistent sleep. I was repeatedly woken up by what I can only describe as the uninvited symphony of locals. Their unbelievably loud trucks tore up and down local back roads. It went on for hours. I am not a “Get Off My Lawn!” type of guy. I was just really eager to a quiet night in the woods by a quiet fire.

The sun made its way up about a quarter passed six. The chorus of birds and the nearby campers starting to stir got me up. I felt excited to start my day. I knew this trip was not going to involve a long hike or tromping along a trail. However, I wanted to head over to Lake Absegami. I wanted to shoot some early shots because I knew this lake was magical on early Autumn mornings. I quickly dismantled the tent and chair. Then, I made my way across the park to take some shots before heading home.

I can not recommend this park enough in the area. It is a serene and peaceful nook nestled in the Pine Barrens and one of the stops along the Batona Trail. It is worth your time if you get a chance check it out!
